From Roman coins placed in the mouths of some of the deceased to pay Charon, the ferryman who takes the dead across the River Styx to the underworld, one or two burials may be dated to the 1st century CE. These deceased, once members of the early nomadic Yueh-chih confederation and now citified ruling Kushans residing at Yemshi Tepe, wrapped the bodies in shrouds sewn with an infinite variety of gold spangles that remained in place as the fabric on which they were sewn disintegrated over time.
