Doorway adorned with large circular metal knobs emphasizing the importance of the household. Upstairs windows with wooden frames looking out onto the public thoroughfare. The toilet on the roof empties directly into the public street for there is little concern about public spaces. The walled roofs of these traditional houses are one of the most useful spaces. The kitchen, toilet, and bathing facilities are most often located on the roof. It is also used for drying meats and vegetables, laundering and many other activities, including summer sleeping. Jui (drainage ditch in the center of the alley winds around mounds of toilet waste.
