Amir Abdur Rahman Period; Bostan Serai, Zarnegar Park 1892.
ca. 1900
There were several gardens outside the south wall of the Arg where in 1892 Amir Abdur Rahman built a relatively small two-storied private palace. Here he could relax and entertain personal friends away from formal court ceremony. Known as the Bostan Serai (Orchard Garden), this garden was originally laid out in the 15th century by Ulugh Beg, an uncle of the Moghul Emperor Babur. The palace differed architecturally from the Amir's more formal palaces. The Bostan Serai is a fitting example of Amir Abdur Rahman's innovative ideas that radically changed the look of hte architectural scene : 1) all his buildings were outward-looking instead of facing inward on protected courtyards; 2) all his buildings were surrounded by gardens and masses of lowers; 3) expanses of water and fountains were frequently present; 4) all his buildings were sturdily built for he insisted on durability.
