King Ananullah’s dreams came to an abrupt halt as Shinwari Pushtun tribesmen from the Jalalabad area rose in revolt against his reforms on the 12th of November 1928 and marched on Kabul where, by 17 December, Tajiks led by Bacha Saqqao were also closing in.. The King abdicated on 14 January 1929 and fled in his Rolls Royce to Kandahar, followed by most of the builders of Paghman. By the 1960s and 70s most of their villas were rented by foreigners fore summer retreats before they were destroyed.. But their legacies continue. Ladies still keep an eye on the western fashion world, secular education is in great demand, gender it a priority issue, and, Kabul’s building boom is more alive than ever.
