Bamiyan Valley. Bamiyan Province.
October 1973
The peace and tranquility of the vast expanse of pastel cliffs on the north side of the valley inspired pilgrims with visions of colossal figures symbolizing the Buddha's universality and the greatness of his teachings. The largest, on the left, was linked to another smaller figure on the right by a vast 1800-meter expanse honeycombed with 750 man-made caves used as monasteries and sanctuaries.
