Sculpture From Shotorak. Shotorak, Kapisa Province.
This schist bas relief pedestal panel (h. 24 cm) dating from the 3rd-5th CE depicts the Buddha entering Nirvana, a state of release from all passions, delusions and future rebirths. The Buddha entered this state ca. 480 BCE at the age of 80. To appreciate Shotorak bas reliefs one must understand much of Buddhist lore. Here Vajrapani, the Buddha's bodyguard, kneels at the head with one hand raised in grief, one hand on his Thunderbolt. Companion of 25 years, Ananda, stands at the foot, Subhadra, the last convert, sits under the couch with a messenger. Three nobles of the area stand behind the reclining Buddha. Two Sal trees flank the couch.
