Heroon of Kineas: Inscription. Ai Khanoum, Takhar Province.

Inscription. The earliest structure at Ai Khanoum is the Kineas Heroon (tomb sanctuary) dating ca. 300 BCE. It occupies an honored place at the center of the lower city for, as this inscription on the base of a stela (pillar) in front of the tomb informs us, it is dedicated to Kineas, the founder of the city. Delphic maxims copied in Delphi, Greece, by Clearchos, a pupil of Aristotle, were also inscribed here: As children learn good manners; as young men control the passions; in middle age be just; in old age give good advice; then die without regret.
