The Kabul Museum was renamed the National Museum of Afghanistan in 1965 to reflect the increase in objects flowing in from a growing numbers of excavation. Now these invaluable collections were in serious danger. The government's museum staff sat helpless in Kabul, unable to visit the museum because the Hezbe Wahdat party had taken control of Darulaman in July 1994. it was now in enemy territory. Sotirios Mousouris, UN Special Representative in Islamabad, flew to Kabul in September and met with Ali Mazari, leader of the Wahdat party. Safe passage was negotiated for the museum staff so work could begin at the museum.
