A few outstanding statuettes of yakshi (nature spirits) dating from the 1st century CE. were carved almost in the round like this one (h. 47 cm) which wears a flowing sari-like garment from the waist down to her heavy anklets together with others in similar high relief, 45 cm. and 56 cm. tall, these are the largest examples of ancient ivory carving from India. They also come from Mathura, between Delhi and Agra.
