Buddha Stucco Head. Hadda, Nangarhar Province.

1965
Stucco Buddha heads with serene expressions enhanced by half-closed eyes signifying inward detachment from this material world conformed to the Buddhist ideal of a spiritual leader (h. 23.5 cm). Note the long ear lobes, a distinguishing feature that reminds worshipers of the buddha's royal birth when he wore heavy, jeweled earrings. The empty stretched lobes symbolize his renunciation of worldly passions.
